Congestion Relief Using Herbs and Essential Oils

Our youngest started with a runny nose about a week before Christmas. By the weekend, it had moved to his chest and he had a terrible cough. I was all out of the Breathe blend from doTERRA that I had used for him with a previous cough, so needless to say that Saturday was a pretty rough night. The next morning I decided to try to make my own cough syrup to see if that would help. I was going to initially just give him some raw honey with a drop of Wild Orange in it, which is supposed to be good for congestion, but then remembered I also had some yarrow leaf that a friend had encouraged me to keep on hand specifically for congestion. Using these ingredients...
I
yarrow leaf, raw honey, and a drop of Wild Orange, I created a cough syrup and a drink that my boys both loved. Note that this is not normal as yarrow leaf in my opinion tastes disgusting, but I am blessed to have boys with excellent taste buds. If you want to try this, adding more honey should make it palatable enough to get down. For the cough syrup I just diluted a tablespoon of raw honey with a bit of yarrow leaf tea and added a drop of Wild Orange. For the drink, I mixed about a tablespoon of raw honey, 1 drop of Wild Orange, and the yarrow leaf tea, used a 1:1 ratio with water and had both boys drink it throughout the next couple of days.

Now, I will say, this did not make the cough go away completely, but it did calm it a ton. Once we got the cough under control, I continued alternating oils on his chest and back. Peppermint and lavender to help him breathe (remember I am out of Breathe and any other recommended oils for this), Wild Orange for his congestion, and then DigestZen to help his body process the mucous from the congestion. I kept this protocol up for about 3 days. It still took him about a week to get through this completely from start to finish, but the thing I noticed this time versus other times in the past is that he didn't get stuffed up. His nose kept running. This was AMAZING compared to times in the past where the poor kid was having breast milk squirted up his nose and steam in his face.

I will definitely be keeping these ingredients on hand going forward. Oh, and I will also be getting more Breathe this month, although hopefully it won't be needed.
